Hello Alec,
I am at home today with a drippy cold and have taken the opportunity to read the latest Journal. I spotted a reference to Frederick Seymour TRITTON who lived at 4, Park Road Surbiton Hill and this, being a short distance away, was within easy walking distance as I went out to buy some more Strepsils. the house where Frederick lived is no longer there. Numbers 2 and 4 are a pair of what look like 1950s semi-detached houses with a large bungalow next door at number 6. I remember visiting the bungalow once with a Kingston university friend for some purpose which I have now forgotten. Looking on a series of local O.S. maps produced in a pack by Kingston Heritage Centre I can see what must have been the home of Frederick. It was there in the mid 1920s when the area started to become really built up after the arrival of the Kingston by-pass and was there before the mid 1880s. I know this because my house is not on the map, being built between 1881 and 1891, judging by Census records. Frederick's house also predates Regent House, which was built on parkland behind what became Park Road. This was the home of the owner of the Cafe de Paris in London, who entertained numerous celebrities at his home. The grounds of Regent House surrounded Frederick's house and garden on three sides. His house remained when Regent House was demolished and very desirable residences built on the estate.
